Create a Fall Hair Care Regimen Based on Your Hair Porosity
Fall has finally arrived, and the change in seasons has us rearranging our hair care routines. With the arrival of cooler temperatures, hair issues such as dry hair and frizz, tend to rear their ugly heads!
Fall hair care is all about restoring the hair from the inside out. Using a clarifying shampoo to remove impurities, and using a conditioner to restore moisture, prepares the hair for seasonal changes. This article will give you the rundown on hair porosity and provide valuable tips to use in your personal hair care regimen.
What is Porosity?
The word “porosity” sounds so scientific, but it simply refers to how well your hair is able to absorb and hold moisture. Hair porosity is important because it determines how to manage your hair for ultimate health.
How to Identify Your Hair Porosity?
If your hair is low porosity, you may notice that your hair struggles to maintain moisture, your hair always has buildup and dirt, or it takes a long time for your hair to dry. Remedies for managing low porosity hair include using heat when conditioning the hair. By sitting under a heated dryer or placing a plastic cap over the conditioning hair, the heat helps to open the hair cuticle, which helps the hair to better absorb the product.
Another remedy would be to use lighter hair care products. Using heavy products on low porosity hair may cause more buildup and dirt because the product is just too heavy to absorb. A lighter product for low porosity hair may be more beneficial and more absorbent.
If your hair is high porosity, you’ll notice that your hair sucks up product like a sponge, which causes you to constantly have to add product to your hair. You’ll also notice that your hair feels dry and becomes tangled easily.
Remedies for managing high porosity hair include protein treatments to help avoid breakage, sealing in moisture with natural oils and butters such as olive oil, coconut oil, and shea butter. Deep conditioning with heavy, thick conditioners is also a great way to maintain the health of high porosity hair.
Now that you know what porosity is and the characteristics of low and high porosity hair, you can now determine what category your hair falls under. Once you determine your hair category, start to think about products that would best fit into your regimen based on what your hair needs.
For example, if you have high porosity hair, you don’t want to use a clarifying shampoo that strips your hair of all of its natural oils, because high porosity hair loses its moisture just as quickly as it absorbs it.
Get to know your hair better this fall. It’s important to understand the specifics in your porosity and create your regimen around the porosity of your hair. Give your hair all the love and affection it needs by using the proper products and observing how it responds to those products.
